(לשאלה) ממעלה למטה (ח"א פ"ב או"פ ג') היינו מבחינה א' עד בחינה ד': כי בחינה ד' שנשארה בלי אור נבחנת למטה מכל המדרגות, וכל שהרצון לקבל שלו קלוש יותר נבחן ליותר עליון עד שבחינה א' נבחנת שהיא למעלה מכולם.
De arriba hacia abajo (Parte I, capítulo 2, Or Pnimí, apartado 3): significa desde la primera fase hasta la cuarta fase. La cuarta fase, que quedó sin luz, se considera inferior a todos los grados. Cuanto más débil es el deseo de recibir, más elevado se considera el grado, hasta que la primera fase es considerada la más elevada de todas.
